Cosmic Rock

Thronehammer calls Durham UK and Furth Germany each a respective home while uniting Kat Shevil Gillham (Uncoffined/Winds of Genocide/Ex-BlessedRealm), Stuart West (Ex-Obelyskkh/Ex-The Walruz) and Tim Schmidt (Naked Star/Seamount) in this completely excellent group of ultra doom metal. The debut release entitled ““Usurper of the Oaken Throne” is truly epic, grandiose and crushing yet smooth doom metal of six songs totaling a mighty seventy eight minutes.

This is the kind of record in the genre I’d like to hear: soaring vocals over a massive audio experience of giant riffage and great drums. Influenced by the greats like Celtic Frost, Saint Vitus, Pink Floyd (who’s influence is evident in the soundscape experience of the album), the holy Iron Monkey and Bathory I really enjoyed this record! Six songs rising and falling with high quality artistic touches, epic themed lyrics and vocals all pushed over the top with excellent professional production.

From the opener “Behind the Wall of Frost”, “Conquered and Erased”, “Warhorn”  “Svarte Skyer” and “Thronehammer” to the closer “Usurper of the Oaken Throne” this is a powerful debut and one of my favourites this year.  Strong, strong debut, looking forward to see hear what unfolds with their onward campaign of metal and a very creative heavy music journey.
